Eiao has a rugged topography. Its vegetation and soils have greatly suffered from the overgrazing of sheep. The island is now denuded on 50 to 60% of its surface and eroded by the frequent rains and violent winds. Geologically, the island is hollow and weakened by a huge underground water layer which saved it from the nuclear testings initially forecast there.
