Fallen in battle

Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery in Normandy hosts the graves of 9,387 American soldiers, including 4 women and 307 unknown soldiers, who died in battle during the D-Day invasion. The remains of approximately 14,000 soldiers, originally buried in the region, were repatriated to the United States at the request of their relatives between 1947 and 1954. The line of white Italian marble crosses and Stars of David, all facing West, towards the United States, and the immaculate lawns invite contemplation and remembrance. The servicemen buried there came from all over the USA, but also for a few of them from England, Scotland and Canada.
