François Rabelais, one of the major humanist writers of the Renaissance, narrated the adventures of Gargantua in his second novel (1534). The Lozère department is filled with references to the giant, such as the traces of his strides in Châteauneuf-de-Randon or his left shoe at the Signal de Randon. The legend tells that the two Puechs of Allègre and Mariette (4,000 ft / 1,220 m) would have been formed by limestone soil brought back under the sole of Gargantua's clogs when he returned from plowing in the Causses.
