The belgian singer Jacques Brel was buried on October 12, 1978 in the Atuona cemetery of the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, to the left of the tomb of the french painter Paul Gauguin. He rests above his house, facing the beautiful Bay of the Traitors. Brel, and his companion Madly, had arrived by boat on the island in 1975, after eight months of travel.
