First great painter to deliver the keys of the first arts to the West, Paul Gauguin settled in Atuona, on the island of Hiva-Oa, in the Marquesas in 1901 and became, posthumously, one of its best advertisers. A museum is dedicated to him in the Papeari Botanical Park and one can visit his modest tomb of black basalt erected by the oceanist O'Reilly in the Atuona cemetery.
