Tomb of Sainte Odile

0
The cult of Sainte Odile dates back almost to her death in 720. The Saint Gallen manuscript, written between 900 and 950, contains a Vita Sanctæ Odiliæ Virginis (Life of the virgin Sainte Odile). For 12 centuries, her remains braved lootings, fires, and revolutions. Sainte Odile's tomb is composed of a stone base in which is enclosed her sarcophagus. The cover has a plaque carved with plant motifs. It bears the inscription Sepulcrum Sanctæ Odiliæ Virginis (Sepulcher of the virgin Sainte Odile). The side visible to the believers is pierced with three rectangular openings closed by gilded bronze gratings.
