Near the northern crossing of the Saint-Denis Basilica, there is an imposing tomb made of Carrara marble (Italy). In this two-storey mausoleum lie King Louis XII (1462-1515) and his wife Anne de Bretagne (1477-1514). The building is pierced by 12 arcades, each of which houses an apostle. The four corners represent the cardinal virtues (prudence, strength, temperance and justice). Inside, the royal couple lies naked on a sarcophagus, frozen in death. On the upper floor, the two rulers are praying on their knees with their hands joined. The tomb was made by Florentine sculptors, the Juste brothers, between 1516 and 1531.
