As amazing as it may seem, there is no specific training to become a bell caster. In France, there are about 300 bell makers: craftsmen who design, manufacture, install, restore, and maintain bells and clocks in buildings. They come from the ‘Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts’, the ‘Ecole Boulle’ or high schools specialising in industrial casting. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 35 bell foundries in France. Nowadays, only 3 foundries of monumental bells are still active, including Cornille-Havard. Passing on the tradition to the younger generations is therefore essential.
