To honour the Holy Virgin

These panels of the Issenheim Altarpiece (first opening) were presented on the occasion of major liturgical celebrations, particularly those in honour of the Virgin Mary. On the left, the shutter shows the Resurrection of Christ: Jesus rises from the tomb alive and ascends into heaven. The Resurrection and Ascension are summarised here in a single image. On the right, the panel shows the Annunciation, when the archangel Gabriel comes to announce to Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, the son of God. Mary is depicted in a church to make the event sacred. This medieval marvel, painted by Grünewald, is on display at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.
