'To'ere', the central percussion instrument of Polynesian orchestras

An essential Polynesian percussion instrument, the 'to'ere' is a drum without membrane, cut in the wood of 'ati' (tamanu), 'miro' (rosewood) or 'pou'. Simple in appearance, it is rich in sounds and results from a long artisanal work ranging from the choice of the wood to its sculpture requiring both technical mastery and an excellent ear. The stick, often in 'aito', must be sufficiently hard and heavy to allow rolls and fast sequences. There are several kinds of 'to'ere' including the 'toere hoe', played vertically with a single stick, and the 'piti tairi' played horizontally with two sticks.
