Pastoralism in alpine pastures, also called “estives” in Auvergne, is still practiced by the Auvergne breeders. Threatened with extinction in the 1950s’, this tradition is perfectly compatible with the use of the same spaces by skiers in winter. Several studies have even shown the interest of grazed grassy soils for the practice of skiing, since the presence of a plant cover helps fighting against soil erosion and fixing the snow.
