The Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve is located in the Mont-Dore massif, on the Southern slopes of the Puy de Sancy. It neighbours the Chaudefour valley and encompasses the glacial cirque of Fontaine Salée. Its mountainous fauna includes reintroduced mouflons, chamois and groundhogs, as well as deers, and more than 130 species of birds and 60 species of butterflies. Its flora – particularly rich in the summit areas protected by the winter snow – includes nearly 1,200 taxa, of which 80 were given a protection or rarity status.
