Three churches in a cemetery

A saying from the 14th century described the Place des Trois Eglises in Riquewihr (Haut-Rhin) as “Three churches in a cemetery”. The town had three religious buildings on the same square – the parish church Sainte-Marguerite (12th to 15th centuries) surrounded by its cemetery, the church Notre-Dame (14th century) and the chapel Saint-Erard (14th century). After 1534, Protestant worship took place in Sainte-Marguerite (photo), Notre-Dame and Saint-Erard became private property and the cemetery was moved outside the walls. A small Catholic church, Sainte-Marguerite, was rebuilt in the 19th century near the Porte-Neuve.
