Three categories of feathers

The feathers of the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) can be listed into three categories corresponding to specific functions. The short and pinkish-white cover feathers on its neck and body provide the bird with thermal insulation. The long, stiff, black-colored wing feathers, hardly visible in this photo, allow it to fly long distances. Finally, the long, supple, and easily ruffled feathers of the flamingo's back serve during courtship rituals.
