The Arc de Triomphe was initiated by Napoleon I after the battle of Austerlitz (1805) to pay tribute to the soldiers of the Grande Armée. The architect Jean-François Chalgrin, in charge of the design, died in 1811. Louis-Robert Goust, his student, succeeded him. The abdication of the emperor in 1815 halted the work. In 1823, King Louis XVIII had the work resumed, as he wished to dedicate the monument to the Royal Army of the Pyrenees. After his death, it was not until King Louis-Philippe I came to power (1830) that the work was completed in 1836. The Arc de Triomphe is dedicated to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire.
