In 1806, Napoleon I decided to erect a triumphal arch to the glory of his armies. The architect Jean-François Chalgrin (1739-1811), a specialist in the neoclassical style and former architect to Louis XVI, was commissioned to build the monument on the Place de l’Etoile. At the time of his death in 1811, the arch did not exceed 5 metres. After several architects and a few poses in its elevation, the monument measures 49.54 metres high, 44.82 metres long, and 22.21 metres wide. It is surrounded by 100 stone pillars, linked by chains. In 1836, King Louis-Philippe dedicated it to the Revolution and the Empire in a bid for political appeasement.
