The Zekreet Fort

Zekreet Fort is located about an hour’s drive from Doha, or twenty minutes from Dukhan. Archaeologists date its construction to the very early 19th century by the pirate Rahmah bin Jabir al-Jalahimah (1760-1826). Known for scouring the Persian Gulf, the pirate seized Zubarah in 1809 and established a short-lived hegemony over this part of Qatari territory. The fort of Zekreet is considered to be the southernmost milestone in its territorial expansion. In 1811, Rahmah bin Jabir al-Jalahimah was chased out of Zubarah by the Al-Thani tribe and retreated to the city of Damman (Saudi Arabia). Located in an inaccessible cove, the coastal fort of Zekreet would serve as a base for the pirate’s fleet or as a place of refuge for some of the members of the Al Jalahma clan.
