Aged 8,400 years, Puy de la Vache is part of one of the most recent volcanic complexes of the Chaîne des Puys. The massif extends in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, which houses eighty volcanoes. Located in the locality of Saint-Genès-Champanelle to the southwest of Clermont-Ferrand in the Puy-de-Dôme department, Puy de la Vache is attached to its twin volcano, Puy de Lassolas. These two volcanoes, whose last eruption dates back to 6,020 years BC, are the youngest of the Chaîne des Puys.
