The Louvre Palace is the largest architectural complex in France. It was built on the right bank of the Seine, on the site of the 13th-century fortress built by King Philippe Auguste. At the beginning of the 16th century, on the orders of François I, the architect Pierre Lescot drew up the plans for a Renaissance palace. The building was enlarged and modified all up to the 19th century by Henri II, Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV, and then by Napoleon I and Napoleon III.
