In ancient times, the Romans founded the town of Autun and imported vines into the Burgundy region. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, two monastic orders, Cîteaux and Cluny, took part in the deployment and development of vine cultivation. Over time, wine replaced beer on Burgundian tables. In the abbeys and monasteries, the monks develop an agricultural activity, including that of viticulture. The vines then become the property of the Cistercian and Cluniac monks who will extend the reputation of Burgundy wine.
