Built in the 13th century, Reims Cathedral experienced a series of misadventures with its stained-glass windows. They were all destroyed during a hurricane in 1580. Nicolas Dérodé was responsible for replacing them, but the new ones were again entirely blown up during the German bombings of 1914. The current stained-glass windows of the cathedral were created by Jacques Simon in 1937. He based his work on sketches made by his father to respect the original iconography. In the small rose windows of the central portal, on the western facade, the Virgin Mary and Christ stand surrounded by 24 medallions representing the allegories of the Virgin's litanies. At the top of the ogive is Marie Médiatrice, refuge of the sinners.
