Part of the jewels of the French Crown, this watch slipped through the cracks of the 1887 auction. Allocated to the Louvre, the jewel comprises 265 diamonds mounted on a double gold and silver case. The outer case is decorated with two swords, a crescent moon and sun rays, while the inner case is in rose gold engraved with a stylised flower. The white enamel dial has black enamel Turkish numerals and the hands are enriched with diamonds. Made in London around 1816 by Daniel de Saint-Leu, the Queen of England’s watchmaker, the watch was presented to King Charles X by the Dey of Algiers Hussein ben El Hussein (1765-1838).
