The Wagons-Lits Company

The Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF exhibits two carriages of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grands Express Européens (CIWL): a dining car and a sleeping car from the company’s “blue” period (after 1922). These two very luxurious cars surely crossed France at 140 km/h in complete safety, on the London-Paris-Côte d’Azur route or on the Sud-Express, heading for the Iberian Peninsula. In 1962, after the purchase of the French CIWL fleet, the SNCF integrated the dining cars into its fleet. They were used until the end of the 1970s.
