The volcanic nature of the Chaîne des Puys

The volcanic nature of the Chaîne des Puys was discovered in 1751 by the geologist Jean-Etienne Guettard (1715-1786). In 1763, the physicist Nicolas Desmaret (1725-1815) discovered the volcanic origin of basalt. As for the geologist Déodat de Dolomieu (1750-1801), he proclaimed in 1797 that lava came from the “burning depths of the earth” and not from the surface combustion of coal. The German geologist Christian Leopold von Buch (1774-1853) preferred to study volcanoes in France rather than in Italy, because ancient volcanic eruptions were easier to observe there.
