The visits of Petrarch

The Castle of the Bishops of Cavaillon holds the memories of the visits of the Florentine poet and humanist Francesco Petrarca or Petrarch (1304-1374) to his friend Philippe de Cabassolle (1305-1372), bishop of Cavaillon, with whom he always remained intimate. Petrarch met Philippe de Cabassolle in 1337 when he first settled in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, where the prelate had a residence. The poet dedicated his De Vita Solitaria, a praise of solitude and a Christian manual of the literate life written in 1346, to him and sent it twenty years later to its recipient.
