At the foot of Château-Gaillard, the fortress erected by Richard the Lionheart between 1197 and 1198, lies the village of Petit-Andely. Originally a fishermen's hamlet on the Seine – named ‘La Culture’ –, Petit-Andely grew when the castle was built at the end of the 12th century. Many thousands of workers and craftsmen working on the fortress site were housed there. Nowadays, the village is a tourist stop after visiting Château-Gaillard and the limestone cliffs along the Seine.
