In 709, Aubert, bishop of Avranches, established a community of twelve canons on the rock to serve the sanctuary and host pilgrims. At that time, the Mont was home on its eastern flank to villagers fleeing Viking raids. Gradually, stonecutters, masons, and carpenters joined them, drawn to the construction site of the abbey church. Then came the laymen responsible for supplying the religious community. Despite the numerous reconstructions, the original core of the village is still visible.
