The village of Marie Harel

In the Pays d'Auge, the village of Camembert is renowned worldwide for the cheese bearing its name. In the 12th century, it was mentioned as Campo Maimberti or Camp Maimbert. In the village, a stele pays homage to Marie Harel, who is said to have developed the recipe for camembert in 1791 with the help of Abbot Charles-Jean Bonvoust. The Camembert de Normandie has benefited from an AOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) since 1986.
