The Versailles of horses

Louis XIV was disappointed with the building of his first personal stud farm in Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines and its unsatisfying results. The horses were in poor health and the cultivated land infertile. In 1714, the King entrusted the selection of a more favorable site to his Grand Squire François Gédéon de Garsault. Such initiative led to the construction, between 1715 and 1736, of the Haras National du Pin, known as the Versailles of horses. In the heart of a 1,480-acre (600 ha) estate, the stud farm endeavors to breed the best horses possible.
