To cope with food shortage, the inhabitants of Petit Andelys were expelled from Château-Gaillard during a siege by the French army in 1203. The besiegers ordered that they be sent back to reduce English resistance. Rejected from all sides and known as the useless mouths, the inhabitants died of hunger. Today, Les Andelys is home to a significant heritage that comprises a Gallo-Roman frieze, ramparts, a belfry, and a so-called miraculous fountain. A museum dedicated to Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) recalls that the painter drew his inspiration from the region.
