Nestled in the rocks of the Montdenier Massif, the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is settled at the southern end of the UNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence, which covers an area of 1,236 square miles (1,989 km²). Created in 2000, it is the oldest geopark in France, which today has seven. Located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, about 93 miles (150 km) from each summit of the Marseille-Nice-Grenoble triangle, the Geopark of Haute-Provence brings together some sixty municipalities and presents a significant diversity mixing Alpine and Provençal characters.
