The salt marshes of Vieux Salins in Hyères include a high landscape value afforestation of umbrella pines (Pinus pinea) on their seafront. These trees are recognizable from afar by their originally spherical bearing that widens and spreads towards the top with age. Their trunk, which exceptionally exceeds 98 ft (30 m), testifies to the trees' quest for sunlight. Well suited from dry lands, the umbrella pines are also used to cleanse marshy areas. Widely distributed by the Romans around the Mediterranean for its fruit and the quality of its wood, the conifer has been used for landscape purposes since the Renaissance.
