The two versions of the SG 38 glider

The SG 38 glider was available in two versions, one of which was fairing (on the back ground of the picture). The pilot was surrounded by canvas tubes which made the aircraft heavier. The difference in weight was to be compensated for by “lightening” the pilot, but the performance of the two versions was identical. The naked version was safer for the pilot as he would not be injured by the fairing in case of a failed landing. The SG 38 and subsequent models were copied all over Europe. Some of them are still flying today in many German flying clubs.
