The treasures of a castle chapel

The castle chapel of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, whose austere exterior appearance evokes a defensive structure, has been established since the middle of the 11th century above the village, in the ruins of the old medieval fortress. A Stations of the Cross, a Calvary with three crosses, and a sepulcher with a recumbent Christ were added to its collection in 1826 and 1830. In 1997, excavations carried under the floor of the apse uncovered a rectangular Romanesque stone altar that bears the inscription In onore santi Saturnini martiri (In honor of the martyr Saint Saturnin). It also contains an 11th-century carved wooden pulpit and a painting of the Holy Family.
