The towers of the Saint-Sulpice church

The church of Saint-Sulpice, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is popular with Parisians, thanks in particular to the paintings by Delacroix that decorate its interior. However, the asymmetry of its two towers is surprising. Begun in 1646, the church was still not completed in 1732, when construction of the towers began. The north tower, with its bell tower and statues, was completed in 1777. However, the Revolution interrupted the work on the south tower, which was finally completed in 1838, following the plans of the 17th century. Thereafter, the two towers were never unified, and the north tower is always 5 metres higher than the south tower.
