The Tower of Thieves

The Tower of Thieves of Riquewihr was built in 1335. Initially a defensive construction, it became the seat of the seigniorial justice of the Counts of Württemberg. It is hexagonal and climbs to 60 ft (18 m). It was accessed by the rampart walk and became a prison in the 15th century. It is now a museum. The tower houses a 16 ft deep dungeon (5 m). Its guard room, once used to perform interrogations, hosts a collection of torture instruments. The villagers feared this tower. The bourgeois, for their part, were imprisoned in another one, to the south of the city, destroyed in 1804.
