Agriculture has long been the resource and the main activity of the commune of Gordes in the Vaucluse department. Over the centuries, its inhabitants have developed artisanal activities (silk spinning, tannery, shoemaking, wool weaving) in an attempt to meet their needs but have finally deserted the village impoverished by earthquakes, industrial changes, agricultural diseases, meteorological hazards and the First World War. Gordes regained momentum in the 1950s thanks to the artists of the Avignon festival who, seduced by the village and its environment, made it a worldwide renowned tourist destination.
