The torch mould

The torch mould is one of the techniques used by the Lalique factory to produce small pieces such as stemware. The glassmaker first picks up at the end of his cane the mass of material needed to make the parison, which is the upper part of the glass. He lifts his rod and blows to pierce the parison. Then he slides the material into a cast iron mould, which is filled with charcoal. During the whole operation, the mould is heated with a torch so that the temperature does not drop and does not alter the shape. The stem and leg of the glass are made separately and then assembled under heat.
