In 1911, faced with the fraud committed by certain wine merchants, 6,000 winegrowers banded together to guarantee the Champagne origin of the grapes used in the production of champagne. It’s the Champagne revolt. The village of Ay took part in the rebellion and several merchants’ houses were burnt down. The repression was harsh but a law was passed making it compulsory to mention “Wine from the Champagne region”. Quite naturally, the General Cooperative of Champagne Winegrowers (Cogevi) was created in 1921. Raoul Collet took over the management of the company in 1928. He was to give his letters of nobility to the house that still bears his name.
