The third largest artificial lake in France

The Lac de Vouglans extends between Orgelet and Moirans-en-Montagne, perched at 1,407 ft (429 m) on the first Jura plateau. It stretches over 22 miles (35 km) and is 984 to 2,624 ft (300 to 800 m) wide. Its dimensions make it the third largest artificial lake in France. It stems from a dam installed on the Ain in 1968. The Lac de Vouglans constitutes a Natura 2000 reserve as the karstic mountains surrounding it are rich in biodiversity. It is not rare to see chamois or wild boars swimming across it. The limestone cliffs that border it here and there provide natural habitats for many birds such as peregrine falcons.
