The symbol of the power of Burgundy

Built between 1450 and 1460 by the Lyonnais architect Jean Poncelet, the Tour Philippe le Bon or Tour de la Terrasse dominates the Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne (Palace of the Dukes and States of Burgundy) in Dijon. Some 150 ft (46 m) high and spread over six floors accessible by a spiral staircase of 316 steps, it offers a panoramic view of the city. A watchtower erected at the same time as the ducal dwelling for Philip III (1396-1467), who became Duke of Burgundy in 1419, it recalls the prestigious medieval past of Dijon under the reign of the Valois Grand Dukes. The tower symbolizes the power of the Dukes of Burgundy and the Burgundian State.
