The Protestant temple of Houlgate and its fine copper bell tower stand by the sea. They attest to the presence of a Protestant colony since 1860 in Beuzeval, the fishing and farming village transformed into a seaside resort in the mid-19th century and renamed Houlgate in 1905. The temple was built in 1863 thanks to the donation of Baron Sébastien de Neufville (1822-1891), a banker in Paris. His friend, Pastor Hippolyte Toupet (1823-1874), attracted many faithful Protestants who were already frequenting the resort and participated in its development. Destroyed during World War II, the original building was replaced by the current temple financed by Millie Harjès, the daughter of banker John Harjès, and inaugurated in 1952.
