The symbol of France
A wine prized by monarchs and aristocrats, champagne became more democratic after the Revolution. It becomes sufficiently well known to be considered a major national symbol. According to Voltaire, “champagne is the shining image of our nation”, it is “the most glorious expression” of French civilisation. A symbol of France in the eyes of the world, champagne was promoted by 20th century advertisers through the prism of modernity. In the 1960s, James Bond, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe made champagne iconic, even irreplaceable.
