The Sully Pavilion

The Sully Pavilion provides access to the large Cour Carrée of the Louvre. Initiated by François I and completed under Louis XIV, the buildings surrounding this courtyard are located on the grounds of the former medieval fortress of Philippe Auguste. The triangular pediment of the pavilion is decorated with a portrait of Napoleon I towering over the muses of history and the arts (by Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre-Charles Simart). Six caryatids (by Simart and Francisque Duret) support it and two corner statues represent Art and Encouragement (Lebœuf-Nanteuil). The building is the only pavilion in the Louvre to have a clock and to carry the French flag.
