The 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris celebrated the centenary of the Revolution and intended to show the progress of science and technology since then. Some 35 countries participated officially, but the monarchies of Europe boycotted the event or participated in a private capacity. The Eiffel Tower was the highlight of the exhibition and offered a view of Paris that no one had ever seen before. More than 2 million visitors climbed to the top of the 1,032 ft (312 m) challenge successfully taken up by Gustave Eiffel, nicknamed the Iron Magician.
