The spiritual elevation of Petrarch
0
0
On April 26, 1336, Petrarch, then 32 years old, was an already renowned clergyman and poet. Fascinated by Mont Ventoux and devastated by a romantic disappointment, he decided to climb the mountain with his brother Gherardo. The poet left Malaucène before dawn and did not return there until the middle of the night after having reached the summit from where, captivated by the panorama, he embraced the whole region with his gaze, from the Monts du Lyonnais to the Alps and Pyrenees. A passage from the Confessions of Saint Augustine then revealed Petrarch the meaning of his ascent and inspired him with a metaphorical text of his spiritual elevation, which recounts the adventures of his day and the awareness of his own turpitudes.
