The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial of Colleville-sur-Mer is undoubtedly the best known among the 27 military cemeteries scattered throughout Normandy. It brings together the graves of 9,387 soldiers who died in combat. In total, more than 100,000 men rest in the region's 27 military cemeteries. Beyond the reception building extends a semicircular memorial in the center of which a 15-ft (7 m) high bronze statue represents The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves. The American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer is designed so that visitors always see an alignment of white crosses wherever they are.
