The southern entrance to the Old Port

The discreet La Désirade lighthouse has marked the southern entrance to the Old Port of Marseille for nearly 140 years. Located off the rocks of the Pointe du Pharo, it was built in 1881 in symmetry with the Sainte-Marie lighthouse of 1855. Its 42 ft high (12.80 m) masonry tower is equipped with an automatic light first operated on April 15, 1881. Electrified on June 5, 1912, it flashes with a green light with a range of 9 nautical miles every 4 seconds.
