The creation of the southern terrace of the Sedan Castle was accompanied by the construction of a 40-metre high tower entirely devoted to artillery (the large tower in the background on the photo), known at the time as the cannon tower. These improvements were carried out in the 16th century alongside the huge reinforcement works which increased the thickness of the north-eastern and north-western walls from 4.5 to 26 metres. On the right, in the foreground, one of the two twin towers that frame the entrance to the original castle built between 1425 and 1430 by Evrard II de La Marck.
