Of the abbey of Cluny, largely destroyed between 1798 and 1823 after being sold as national property, the south cross-brace of the great transept visible here still remains today. The church dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul, whose solemn dedication was celebrated by Pope Innocent II on October 25, 1130, had an apse with an ambulatory and five radiating chapels preceded by two transepts flanked by chapels and separated by a choir. Four bell towers, of which the octagonal Eau Bénite (Holy Water) bell tower remains, crowned the crossings of the transepts and the two arms of the great transept.
